The Mighty Stirling Range

This has to be one of the last unspoilt landscapes left! Rare wildflowers and inquisitive wildlife give the appeal of being at one with nature.
I moved from Perth 3 years ago and we were excited to explore, for us anyway, the 'great unknown. The Stirling Range National Park is located in the heart of the Great Southern Region of WA. With rare wildflowers the range is best viewed between September and December. I never thought wildflowers were my thing until we saw the beauty for ourselves.

My husband was up for something a bit more daring so he approached the mighty 'Bluff Knoll'. This is the hightest point in the range wich entails a 4 hour return trek. This trek is not for the faint hearted or, as my husband found out, for those with fears of heights. At one part of the walk the path is on the edge of the mountain with a sheer drop off, and on a windy day can prove challenging. We made it the top having used the last of our energy, wondering if there was easier way to get down! Since living in the area we have since found out there is....helicopter!

Many tourists come into the area and attempt the climb without taking into consideration changing weather conditions and find themselves stranded at the top in gusty winds and thick cloud cover. Almost every year someone is being rescued!

Kendenup Lodge and Cottages is a great way to admire the Range. It overlooks the Range and has magnificant sunrises. In the winter, on a clear day, you can also see the snow covered peaks. Kendenup Lodge also provides picnic hampers made up of local produce to take with you. For that something or someone special they also provide a romantic white linen lunch in the heart of the Range. From experience the strawberries and champagne goes down really well!
