Perth - Western Australia
Perth has an extraordinary setting right along the Swan River. It is a wonderful little city, and I always enjoy visiting it.
On previous occasions we had been out to Rottnest Island, and that is well worthwhile. On this trip, the weather defeated us: rain and gusting winds. Otherwise, we would have gone out there again. Rottnest offers some lovely beaches, and the adorable quokka, a small marsupial found only on that island. We had also visited Freemantle and been charmed by its village atmosphere.
A trip that I would recommend is the cruise up the Swan River to Houghton’s Winery: this includes a delicious luncheon and is a very relaxing way to spend the day. Another area not to miss is Kings Park. This offers an outstanding view of the city, both day and night. It also has a gumtree-lined drive with each tree dedicated to a veteran of WWI. It is heartbreaking to read the plagues commemorating the many young men who went off to fight in that war.
Kings Park is also a botanical delight with fantastic displays of Australia’s native flora highlighted in a September festival. Ringneck parrots complete the perfection of this city park.

Perth CBD and Suburbs
- Exploring Perth's CBD is an easy task. The city is compact and well planned, even though its location on a broad stretch of the Swan River gives it a spacious feeling. In addition, Perth has one of the best public transport systems in the country. Perhaps the best place to start is the western edge of the CBD, in Kings Park and the Botanic Gardens. Other interesting attractions of the CBD area include the Fire Safety Education Centre and Museum in the original Perth City Fire Station; Francis Burt Law Education Centre and Museum near the Supreme Court Gardens.
