Dog Fence
On the way back to Marree from Muloorina Station, we crossed the Dog Fence. The Dog Fence runs for 4,850 kilometres across the states of South Australia, New South Wales, and Queensland. Without it, dingoes would no doubt decimate sheep. It is a well-maintained fence, and is the longest man-made barrier in the world.
About one kilometre up from the gate, was a man repairing the fence. I wanted to know more about it, so we walked over to have a chat with him. He was responsible for a 289km section of fence. He travelled it every two weeks, and it usually took him about five days to complete the journey. The Dog Fence is managed by a board and funded by sheep farmers. The fence-minder was a very independent fellow, driving the fence and camping by it every night once it got dark. What an interesting encounter.
We made one more stop to photograph a little dragon-lizard that we happened to spot at another gate crossing. The lizard was very pretty, a mottled brown and grey with specs of emerald green. We hadn’t seen many lizards, so we were very pleased to meet this fellow.
