Seed collection
Dried out and separated before being scrubbed with truckwash - that's how we simulate the action of a bird's digestive system.
The warm temperate rainforests of East Gippsland are the home 
of the Pittosporum, they are the favoured roost of some owls and provide food for a range of birds. The trees are laden with fruit at present so I have been down our gully and collected a bucketful. They are set out to dry so they will split and I can get to the seeds. The next step is then to scrub them down with truck wash to simulate the action of digestion by a bird. Later this month our landcare group will be out removing blackberry so that will be an opportunity to scatter the seed in the disturbed ground.
(Samba deer have removed all the lower branches and leaves. allowing the ground below the tree to dry out reducing regeneration of the rainfoest species.)
