Boating within 1 hours drive of Melbourne

by Andrew Mitchell posted on 2008-03-10 19:11 last modified 2008-03-10 19:13
I am interested to find out what the best options are for launching a tinny within around 1 hours drive from Melbourne - Suggestions welcome

Getting the boat ready, TooradinI fished off Tooradin yesterday. It took around an hour to reach from Melbourne's CBD and offered great launching facilities and access to Western Port Bay. The issue I have is we only have a small tinny (3.4 Metres). Ideal for rivers and estuary fishing or car topping.

We didn't have a great deal of success at Tooradin. Perhaps it was because we were fishing the change of the low tide vs the high, but I would have liked to have seen maybe a whiting or two?

My next port of call is Port Phillip, but again, I will require somewhere that offers some shelter should the wind pick up.

Does a place like this exist?

There are boat launching ramps on Western Port other than Tooradin at Stony Point, Newhaven, Cowes, Hastings, Warneet, Lang Lang, Grantville and Rhyll, on Phillip Island. Dependind on the weather all of them, as Western Port can really get wild in a good wind.

I've gone for snapper off a tinny no probs around Port Phillip bay in most places, a lot really depends on the weather .. always keep an eye on it and if starting to lift, head home .. if it drops again, fair and well, but you don't want to be caught way out when it picks up.

Saying that, fishing for whiting you want to be close to shore anyway.

Werribee is worth a try, head and follow the coast towards Pt Cook and fish around the jet ski ramp and out in front of the huts at Campbells Cove beside the Raaf pier in depths from 2-4mts .. Clifton Springs has a boat ramp, and fishing around Curlewis Bank will land you whiting.

Mornington is a great spot too,and not too far away.

The area around the Bellarine Peninsula is another hot spot for KG whiting, the waters of St Leonard’s to Prince George Bank are the locations to go.

I heard you can launch in the Maribyrnong near the race course, and travel down to the mouth of the Yarra. If you do about 4knots with a silver wobbler, on some light line close to the bank; you're sure to pick up a few Blind Mullet, depending on the weather.
Tasty little buggers too, try them with chili and garlic. Don't worry about the bones, just roll them first with an old beer bottle (or a rolling pin).
