Canberra Home for the Treasurer?
"In England of course they have No. 10 Downing Street for the prime
minister and No. 11 which is for the Chancellor of the Exchequer ... I
think there's a lot in that," he said, in interviews marking his 50th birthday on 14 August 2007. While posing a Canberra home for the future and not for the benefit of the current Treasurer, it has provided an opportunity for historical buffs to dig back to the time when Casey House was built in 1938 for the then Treasurer, Richard Casey. On Rhodes Place, just off State Circle, the Georgian Revival home is now run down and was only in use as the Treasurer's home for a short period in any event. Emma MacDonald in today's Canberra Times gives some good detail on the home and the story and there are some nice pictures to show what Casey House looks like. I took it as an opportunity to further connect Prime Ministers and senior political figures with Australian locations.
