REGION: Peel
Just an hour's drive south of Perth, the Peel Region encompasses 5500km² of diverse landscapes, ranging from rolling farm pastures and striking jarrah forests in the east to the calm waters of Peel Inlet and Harvey Estuary in the west and the white sandy beaches that fringe the Indian Ocean. With a combination of popular attractions and its close proximity to Perth, this is one of Western Australia's premier tourist destinations. The protected inlet waters provide an aquatic playground that offers excellent opportunities for sailing, cruising, canoeing, swimming, fishing and crabbing. The area is famous for blue-swimmer crabs that can be easily caught by scoop or drop net. Locals rejoice when the 'crab run' begins, as boat owners armed with drop nets arrive to lure away the bountiful crabs. Golf is also a popular pastime: the region boasts 3 world-renowned golf courses - designed by Ian Baker-Finch, Graham Marsh and Robert Trent Jones Jnr, respectively - and the Peel Region has often been labelled the Golf Coast. Other attractions include wineries; white-water rafting on the Murray River; and Yalgorup NP, containing several lakes - havens for birdlife.
