REGION: Phillip Island and Gippsland Discovery
Located in the calm waters of Western Port and a 1.5hr drive from Melbourne, Phillip Island is accessed by a bridge from the mainland at San Remo. It is Victoria's premier destination for international visitors and boasts superior surfing and unspoilt beaches, an array of wildlife, including colonies of koalas, seals and the famed little penguins' the island's major drawcard. Phillip Island also has some outstanding geological formations, including The Pinnacles, ancient columns of pink granite; the Forrest Caves, large sea-eroded caverns; and Pyramid Rock, a column of basalt in the shape of a pyramid. Cowes is the major town and administrative centre of the island and where the majority of the island's accommodation is to be found. The Australian leg of the 500cc world motorcycle championships is held at the Phillip Island Racing Circuit, not far from Cowes each October. The combined attractions of Phillip Island make it an ideal holiday location. |
