REGION: Macedon Ranges and Spa Country
Boasting over 65 mineral springs concentrated within a relatively small area, this region is recognised as a premier boutique holiday destination due to the resurgence of belief in the healing properties of mineral water. Located a short distance from Melbourne, the Spa Country is an ideal locale for 'taking the waters'. This is a European tradition dating to the 1840s, when the large Swiss-Italian community realised the healing potential of the waters surrounding them. Mineral water has been bottled here since 1850 and the towns of Daylesford and Hepburn Springs have been spa resorts in the European-style since the 1880s. Alternative and natural therapies, including herbal baths and massages, are also offered. The district also offers wineries and relics of the old goldfields. The surrounding rugged bushland is dotted with local reserves such as Lerderderg SP and the Macedon Ranges, which are ideal for bushwalking, horseriding, fishing and picnicking. The Tipperary Walking Track links Hepburn Springs and Daylesford, passing through old gold-mining areas. Surrounded by lakes and regional parks, this lovely area offers a relaxing holiday destination with a diversity of attractions. |
