REGION: Legends Wine and High Country

The Victorian Alps are the southern-most part of the Great Dividing Range. These dramatic yet rounded mountains are far less challenging for skiers than the extremely jagged peaks of their Northern Hemisphere counterparts, the European Alps.

Located south-east of Wangaratta, the Victorian Alps cover a vast and rugged terrain that is mostly protected by national parks. The ski-resort towns dotting the mountains are within an hours radius of each other, so there are many opportunities for skiing. Resorts cater for different levels of skiers.

Mount Hotham, Falls Creek and Mount Bullerhave ski runs for beginners, intermediate and advanced skiers, while Mount Buffalo caters for intermediate skiers. Mount Baw Baw is more suited to beginners. Around Lake Mountain there are some excellent cross-country runs.

The Victorian snow season usually starts in June and lasts until at least September, although some years it has extended as late as November.

Bushwalking, horseriding, paragliding, hang-gliding and trout fishing are some of the many recreational activities that attract visitors during the warmer months.
