REGION: Great Ocean Road

elephant-rock-port-campbell.jpg

This legendary coastal route, starting at Torquay and extending 285km west to Warrnambool, is a journey along a stretch of spectacular coastline via seaside holiday towns, surf beaches, dramatic cliffs, expansive ocean, rainforest and woodlands.

Built between 1919 and 1932 as employment for returned servicemen and as a memorial to soldiers who died in WWI. The road was designed to be a tourist route of world repute in this wild, forested terrain. More than 100 and some believe as many as 700 ships have been sunk by reefs, foul weather and the treacherous waters of the Southern Ocean; the stretch to Peterborough is a stark reminder of the perils of this jagged coastline.

Historic seaside towns provide safe sandy beaches as well as many surfing beaches. Whale watching, horseriding, bushwalking and mountain bike riding, are just some of the activities of this remarkable region.

The Twelve Apostles

Within the Port Campbell NP, these majestic rock formations, seen from the Great Ocean Rd, were once part of the mainland's limestone cliffs, demonstrating the power of the coastline's waves. Rising 65m from the ocean and stretching along the coastline, the offshore sea-stacks are an impressive sight. Other attractions of the national park include London Bridge, The Grotto and Loch Ard Gorge.
