Founded in 1804 and declared a city in 1842, Hobart is rich in reminders of its colonial past. It is Australia's second-oldest city (after Sydney) and more than 90 of the city's buildings are National Trust-classified.

Hobart is nestled on the western shore of the Derwent River and at the foot of Mount Wellington, which is often snowcapped in the winter months. There are panor­amic vistas of the city available from the mountain's superb lookouts.

Like most Australian capitals, Hobart's lifestyle is defined by water; it is a riverside city with a bustling harbour, surrounded by picturesque harbourside warehouses. The harbour remains integral to the city's economy. Only metres from the business district are the docks where overseas ships moor, supplies are loaded for Australia's Antarctic bases and fishing vessels return with their catch. The waterfront area is the focal point for visitors to Hobart, as it is the site for many of the city's tourist attractions.

Main Attractions

Battery Point

  • Hobart's oldest district was once home to sailors, fishermen, prostitutes and shipwrights. It is now a fashionable inner- city neighbourhood.

Cadbury Chocolate Factory

  • Hobart is home to this well-known chocolate manufacturer-a tour of the factory at Claremont is a must for chocoholics.

Cascade Brewery

  • Australia's oldest brewery produces some of the finest beer in the country. Tours of both the brewery and museum are available daily.

Constitution Dock

  • The final destination for the annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race is part of Hobart's picturesque waterfront area.

Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens

  • Established in 1818, these gardens house an extensive collection of native and exotic plants. Features include a cactus house, herb garden and Japanese garden.

Runnymede

  • Set in tranquil gardens, this National Trust homestead was built in 1837. Open to the public, many items in the home are original and the rooms have been lovingly restored.
