Kangaroo Island, South Australia is the third largest island off the Australian coastline. Its reputation as a haven for native wildlife and flora is well deserved, with 30% of its total area covered by national parks. It offers a relaxed lifestyle and endless opportunities for water-based activities such as fishing, swimming, sailing, surfing, scuba diving and boating. Wildlife is very visible with the opportunity to see little penguins, Australian sea-lions, New Zealand fur seals, platypus, 240 bird species, an abundance of koalas, and the kangaroos that the island is named after. Kangaroo Island was commended by a panel of 522 experts who were employed to rank the world's islands by comparing their commitment to sustainable tourism and preserving the environment. The Island is revered for it's pasture lands. Local farmers produce wine, sheep's milk cheese, and Liguran honey. |
