Castlemaine
- This is a prosperous industrial centre and a popular tourist destination, 120km NW of Melbourne. Castlemaine lies at the foot of Mount Alexander at the intersection of the Pyrenees and Midland hwys and is surrounded by old goldfields. In the 1850s and 1860s, the area experienced a gold boom and the town grew rapidly. Many of the town's fine Victorian buildings were built during these boom years.
