Ballarat
- Ballarat is the perfect spot for a short break or longer stay; it is an easy 112km drive from Melbourne. Victoria's largest inland city and regional centre has retained many of its classic Victorian buildings erected from the wealth of the goldrush. The town was also the site of Australia's only white uprising; in 1854, a group of miners led by Irishman Peter Lawlor refused to pay Government licence fees. The rebellion led to clashes with police and soldiers resulting in the deaths of 22 diggers and 3 soldiers. The event is now known as the Eureka Stockade.
