Telegraph Road Cape York

JB | 2008-05-02 | Don't let anyone tell you that the traversing the old telegraph track on Queensland's Cape York is not a challenge. Sure, you don't need to float your car across the rivers on rafts any more, but you still need to travel hundreds of kms on the bumpiest roads I have ever been on. Kidney belt recommended. | read more

Lawn Hill National Park

JB | 2008-05-02 | An absolute oasis in the middle of miles of dry, arid Australia. Lawn Hill is worth the journey. What an experience to find this place that looks devoid of water and to find this. | read more

Flat Tyre Weipa

JB | 2008-05-02 | Our one and only flat tyre for the year came on a near 40 degree hot day, on the way to Weipa, Cape York. Hot, red dust everywhere and a jack that didn't really work that well... It is times like these that you check your water reserves and feel some comfort that you were smart enough to have lots in the tank in reserve. Weipa is a great town with lots of facilities. We had the tyre fixed and it only took us 3 days to clean the red dust out of the van. Any suggestions to sealing a van welcome! | read more

Broken Mountain Bikes

JB | 2008-05-02 | On the way into Lawn Hill, North Queensland, we were stopped by some travellers driving the other way. We did not know what all the fuss was about until I took a look behind our van and found our mountain bikes had broken the tow bar and were dragging on the road. Based on the fact that we had crossed several cattle grids and the bike closest to the road had grinded down to half its normal size, I'd suggest we towed them around 40kms...... move over Chevy Chase! | read more

Cape Tribulation

JB | 2008-05-02 | The beaches at North Queensland's Cape Tribulation are beautiful. The rain forest runs down to the shore and provides a tropical background setting to the white beaches and warm waters in the area. There are crocs in the Daintree river which is not far down the road. On the day in question, we did not venture into the water as the weather was overcast. I'd always seek local knowledge before plunging into the water up North. | read more

Bogged 4x4 Stockton Beach Port Stephens

JB | 2008-05-02 | As I mention in an article on travel Australia, this is our 4.2 diesel 4x4 taking on the sand dunes at Stockton Beach Port Stephens. The car is not well set up for sand travel as you can see by its position sunk up to the doors.... | read more

4x4 and Camper Fraser Island

JB | 2008-05-02 | Traveling the internal sand tracks on Fraser Island was not as challenging as I had first feared. The sand, in comparison with some of the beaches was quite compact and even towing a trailer we rarely got bogged. We got lots of funny looks when I had to back the car and trailer down on to the ferry as I think it is rare that anyone travels there towing a van like ours.... | read more
