Darling Range - Perth CBD and Suburbs
The Darling Range is the tilted edge of a large plateau that is the foundation of this part of Western Australia. It is here where some of the oldest rocks on Earth are exposed. The granite, gniesses and quartzites are more than 2,500 million years old.
The overlying mantle of orange-red laterite rock formed about 10 million years ago, when wetter and more humid conditions than those of today leached minerals from the soil to form an insoluble hard crust. Jarrah forests with a low understorey of wildflowers and grass trees dominate the area.
The western extremity of the Darling Range is the Darling Scarp. Standing 200 metres or so above the coastal plain it is the distinctive feature of the Perth horizon. The scarp exposes huge granite rocks again and favours white-trunked Wandoo trees.
The Darling Range is home to a number of excellent bushwalks, National Parks, arts and craft stores, hotels and restaurants, and many other things to see and do on a weekend getaway.
