This memorial statue was jointly erected by the Shire of Halls Creek and the State Government in 1979 to honour all the pioneers of the Kimberley Region.
It is a memorial tribute to gold miner Russian Jack, a famous figure of the 1885 gold rush whose real name was Ivan Fredericks, and his compassion for a fellow digger.
Russian Jack's mate became quite ill and the nearest medical attention was 300 kilometres away in Wyndham. The mate was placed in a wheelbarrow along with enough water and supplies and Russian Jack pushed him the entire journey. The feat of carrying his friend more than three hundred kilometres symbolises the mateship and endurance of the pioneers of the region who ventured into a land lacking the amenities of civilisation.
