All of Us - Melbourne CBD and Suburbs

All of Us is a remarkable record of the equally remarkable transformation of modern Australia from a single, Anglo-Saxon convict settlement to today s truly multicultural society.

Appalled by the 2005 Cronulla Riots, photographer Michel Lawrence set out to celebrate Australia s multicultural diversity by photographing at least one person from every different country in the world who now calls Australia home.

Lawrence has not only recorded the great variety of today s Australians with photography but also their stories, detailing their often far distant places of birth along with the sometimes dangerous and adventurous paths they took to arrive on these shores.

What Michel Lawrence discovered on his two year odyssey was that all his subjects had one thing in common a desperate desire to be a part of this country, safe and sound from the conflicts or concerns they had left far behind. They wanted to be Australians.

Launched to coincide with Australia Day, Lawrence s photographs will be represented as a book and also as the largest ever portrait exhibition at Federation Square. Over 200 photographs, each measuring over 1 metre square, will adorn the exterior of the Crossbar building at Federation Square from Australia Day until 23 March.

All of Us the exhibition will be launched at Federation Square in conjunction with the launch of Melbourne s Australia Day program. The book will be launched by Julian Burnside QC on 31 January at Melbourne Works on Paper Gallery.
