Katherine Red Cross Canoe Marathon - Katherine
Join in the adventure of canoeing down rapids.
The Katherine Canoe Marathon started in 1982 and has become more successful each year, with entrants from all parts of the country taking part in this unique event. The one day race covers approximately 47 kilometres, with an average paddling time of 10 hours. The section of the Katherine River, which is below the famous Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk), on which the marathon is held, consists predominantly of long deep water holes separated by sets of rapids.
The race is a fundraising event for the Australian Red Cross with a condition of entry that contestants raise money through sponsorships. There are men's, women's, mixed and team sections, with various categories within the sections. This event is open to everyone.
