The ‘Wave Hill Walk Off’ was the beginning of the modern land rights movement and one of the most significant events in Australian and Northern Territory history. Freedom Day is the name given by the Kalkarindji community to the yearly commemoration and celebration of the walk-off from Wave Hill cattle station in 1966. The Festival takes place over three days and includes an official commemoration ceremony, and an evening of music from local Aboriginal bands. Saturday is full of community and arts activities, workshops and displays and tours of heritage sites and the festival culminates with the Freedom Day Concert at night. Everyone is welcome to help celebrate and recognise the significance of the walk off and the events that followed.
Kalkarindji is about 460 kilometres south west of Katherine and can be reached via the fully sealed Victoria and Buntine highways. Visitors can camp in the community, food and drinks will be available and no alcohol can be brought into or consumed in the community.
