DESTINATION: York

York

This is the oldest inland town in Western Australia, settled in 1831, just two years after the Swan River Colony. York prospered as a result of the 1889 gold discoveries at Southern Cross and has since become the main commercial centre for the Avon Valley.

Main Attractions

Awarded the National Trust classification of Historic Town, York has many significant buildings: the Old Gaol, Court House and Police Station (1850), Sandalwood Yards and Tipperary School (1874), Town Hall (1911), Castle Hotel (1853), and Holy Trinity Church (1854), with its rare pipe organ and Robert Juniper-designed glass and paintings. Residency Museum (1843) on Brook St houses a collection of records and memorabilia from early colonial life. York's highly regarded Motor Museum in Avon Tce exhibits more than 200 classic and vintage cars, motorcycles and horse-drawn vehicles. The Old Mill Gallery in Avon Tce sells and displays fine jarrah furniture and artworks. At Avon Park there are picnic facilities and a river-crossing Suspension Bridge originally built in 1906.
