DESTINATION: WyndhamWestern Australia's northernmost town, Wyndham supported a sizeable meatworks industry till its closure in 1985. Today the port town services pastoral, mining and Aboriginal communities and exports diverse cargoes including grain, raw Kununurra sugar, and live cattle shipments to south-east Asia. Main AttractionsA landing port for prospectors during the 1880s goldrushes, Wyndham's port heritage is traced in a pamphlet noting other historic town highlights including the Old Post Office (now privately owned) and the Old Court House, which serves as an historical museum. Saltwater crocodiles can be sighted from the wharf (observed from a distance), or at the Zoological Gardens and Crocodile Park on Barytes Rd, which also breeds the endangered Indonesian Komodo Dragon. Located in Warriu 'Dream Time' Park are large monuments of an Aboriginal family. |

Five Rivers Lookout, 5km north on Bastion Range, is renowned for its spectacular views, which are highly recommended at sunrise or sunset. Aboriginal rock paintings are 18km SW and an unusual temporary prison cell from the 1890s, a Boab Prison Tree believed to be 2000-4000 years old, is 22km SW. A wetland sanctuary for migratory birds including jabiru and brolga, Marglu Billabong, 15km SE, is part of the Parry Lagoons Nature Reserve. A 100m-deep natural swimming hole, The Grotto is located 36km east and is a popular picnic area, as is the water catchment reservoir Moochalabra Dam, 20km from town. Fresh and saltwater fishing are popular in the King River area, though 4WD access is recommended. Tours offered in the region include mustering, horseriding treks, scenic boat cruises, and for an unforgettable Outback station stay, El Questro Station, located 100km south.
