DESTINATION: Wongan Hills

This township is situated in the north-east wheat belt, 184km from Perth. The name, Wongan Hills, originates from an Aboriginal word for 'whispering hills'.

Improvised furniture and implements are among the memorabilia from the early days displayed at the Pioneer Museum in Camm St. Town Park, in Fenton Pl, has BBQ facilities and a children's play area.

During the spring months Wongan Hills and district blossoms into a spectacular sea of wildflowers, best seen at Reynoldson's Flora Reserve, 15km north. Mount Matilda, 10km west, is a flora and fauna reserve with an ecowalk trail. In stark contrast to the region's flat farmlands are various rock formations also popular for wildflower sightings: Dingo Rock, 26km east, Mount O'Brien Lookout, 10km west, Gathercole Reserve on Moonijin Rd, and Christmas Rock, an old water catchment area closer to town, accessed off Wandoo Cres. Lake Ninnan, 10km west, provides a venue for waterskiing, sailing and swimming.
