Pinjarra

One of the oldest towns in Western Australia, picturesque Pinjarra is located on the Murray River, 84km south of Perth in a region supported by farming, bauxite mining and timber milling.


Main Attractions

The Pinjarrah Heritage Trail takes in such sites as St Johns Anglican Church (1861), the Original School House (1862), a Heritage Rose Garden featuring 360 heritage roses, including the oldest known variety in cultivation, and the McLarty family home Edenvale (1888). Within the Edenvale Complex is the Roger May Machinery Museum, the Murray Arts and Crafts Centre, quilt displays and sales, and tearooms. The Murray River has picnic facilities and is used in summer for swimming and canoeing. A suspension bridge crosses the river at Pioneer Memorial Park.

From May to October the Hotham Valley Tourist Railway runs steam train trips between Pinjarra and Dwellingup. Australia's largest alumina operation, Alcoa Refinery, 4km NE, conducts bus tours on Wednesdays. The Alcoa Scarp Lookout, 14km east, offers an overview of the massive plant. Coopers Mill on Culeenup Island was the first flour mill in the region and is accessible by boat only. Tours of the mill are available. Tumbulgum Farm, 38km north at Mundijong has native and farm animals, farm shows and product sales. North Dandalup Dam, 16km NE, South Dandalup Dam at Dwellingup, and Waroona Dam, 33km south, are pleasant picnic and recreational areas. The many attractions of Mandurah, the Peel Inlet and Harvey Estuary, also Yalgorup NP, are a short drive west.
