DESTINATION: Mount BarkerSince vines were planted in the late 1960s Mount Barker, 50km NW of Albany, has enjoyed a growing reputation as a wine-producing region. Central to Porongurup and Stirling Range national parks, the town is also known for its agriculture and commercial wildflower production. Main AttractionsA Police Station Museum is housed in the convict-built station and gaol (1868). The Old Station House Craft Shop is a gallery featuring quality arts and crafts and the Shire Art Gallery on Lowood Rd exhibits works by local artists. Information on hiking trails, the Great Southern Wineries and tours of a banksia farm are available from the tourist bureau. |

Mount Barker Lookout, 5km SW, has sweeping views of the ranges. Werburghs Way Tourist Drive takes in St Werburghs Chapel (1872), 12km SW. Historic Kendenup, 16km NE, is the site where gold was first found in Western Australia. Porongurup NP, 24km east, has bushwalking trails ranging in duration from 10min to 3hrs through dramatic ranges, karri tree stands, and seas of seasonal wildflowers. The highest peak in Stirling Range NP, 80km NE, is Bluff Knoll (1073m). Qualified operators run rockclimbing and abseiling trips to the national park.
