DESTINATION: KatanningA thriving agricultural town 295km SE of Perth, Katanning has the second largest saleyards in Australia (Wagga Wagga in New South Wales has the largest), and is renowned for producing fine merino sheep. Main AttractionsA Heritage Trail pamphlet highlights some of the town's notable buildings including the Piesse family home Kobeelya (1902); the Winery Ruins, on Warren Rd, with its historic vats and equipment; and the National Trust-restored roller flour mill (1891), which now incorporates the Mill Museum displaying roller flour-milling machinery. A Historical Museum of local memorabilia is housed in the first government school and an Art Gallery and Library are situated next to the Shire Offices. Another notable landmark is the Islamic Mosque. All Ages Playground has huge slides and operates a miniature steam train every second and fourth Sunday (from 1pm, weather permitting). Katanning also boasts one of Western Australia's largest recreation and leisure centres. Metro Meat Works offers tours by appointment, and the Police Pools Memorial is a fine place to picnic. |

Local lakes provide venues for watersports, including waterskiing and boating. The Kattaning-Piesse Heritage Trail is a 20km self-guided driving tour. Stirling Range NP, 80km south, is notable for a 65km-long chain of peaks, excellent bushwalking trails and prolific wildflowers in season.
