DESTINATION: Kalgoorlie-BoulderIrish prospector Paddy Hannan's lucky strike in 1893 started the last great goldrush in Australia's history, leading to the establishment of the twin towns of Kalgoorlie and Boulder, 597km east of Perth. Kalgoorlie-Boulder's Golden Mile, believed to be the world's richest square mile of gold-bearing ore, still yields gold. Main AttractionsHannans North Tourist Mine is a fascinating historic mining site that operates surface and underground tours revealing miners' methods and machinery. It forms part of the Australian Prospectors and Miners Hall of Fame that houses 5 interactive galleries. Views of a massive modern operation can be seen from Super Pit Lookout off Eastern Bypass Rd. A 1hr ride on the 'Rattler' on the Golden Mile Loopline Railway, with commentary, travels along a line that in the 1890s was reputed to be the busiest and best. Comprehensive coverage can be found at the Western Australia Museum Kalgoorlie-Boulder with its underground gold vault and lift-ride to views from the mine headframe. A replica statue of miner Paddy Hannan, situated outside the town hall, provides a novel photo opportunity (the original is inside). On Burt St the Goldfields War Museum features armoured vehicles and war memorabilia. Heritage Walks inform visitors about mining-town architecture. Geological specimens of all kinds can be found in the School of Mines Mineral Museum on Cassidy St. Nearby, the Goldfields Art Centre holds regular exhibitions. The Mount Charlotte Reservoir remains as a tribute to engineer C Y O'Connor's ingenious feat and world first—in 1903 he constructed a 563km pipeline to carry water from Perth to the goldfields. The lookout here offers excellent sunset views. Hammond Park on Lyall St is a wildlife reserve with a mini-Bavarian castle. Kalgoorlie Arboretum has over 100 eucalypt species and Karlkurla Bushland Park has walking paths and a lookout. The history of Kalgoorlie's notorious red light district—Hay St—is recounted at the Bordello Brothel Museum. |

Fortunes rest on the outcome of a penny toss at the Bush 2-up School (7km north on the Leonora Rd), the town's only legal gambling den. Organised Goldfields Tours take in Kalgoorlie, Coolgardie, nature reserves and ghost towns. Scenic flights, prospecting, Aboriginal culture and bush tucker tours as well as seasonal wildflower trips are available. Tours of the working gold mine, Kanowna Belle Gold Mine, are also available. Kurrawang Emu Farm, 18km west, offers guided tours.
