DESTINATION: Fremantle

Fremantle

The historic city of Fremantle lies 19km SW of Perth at the mouth of the Swan River. Now merged with suburban Perth, 'Freo', as the locals call it, is a major fishing and shipping port with a vibrant multi-cultural society.

It has lovingly preserved its 19th-century heritage and created a relaxed ambience. In 1986-87, the city hosted the first America's Cup yacht races held outside the USA.

This major event triggered the rejuvenation of many of the historic 19th-century buildings; there are more than 3000 buildings of historical significance and the National Trust has classified 150 of these.

Main Attractions

The E Shed Markets, at Victoria Quay, contain more than 100 specialty shops. Tram West offers tours of historical buildings, the harbour and other attractions in Fremantle. The Western Australian Maritime Museum, in Cliff St, has an internationally important collection of shipwreck relics dating from early 17th-century Dutch ships, including the Batavia. A large new section of the museum, tracing the state's maritime history, is at Victoria Quay. The submarine, Ovens, located nearby off Slip St, is open to the public.

Fremantle History Museum and Arts Centre, located in the Fremantle Arts Centre in Finnerty St, is in a convict-built former lunatic asylum. Tours are available of Fremantle Prison, 1 The Terrace, this was the last convict prison to be built in Australia and is a fascinating experience. For the cafe society, don't miss Fremantle's popular South Tce, known as the 'capuccino strip'.

Founded in 1829 on the banks of the Swan River, Perth's fortunes received a substantial boost in the 1890s when gold was discovered at Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie to the east. Today, Perth is a scenic and sophisticated city, renowned for its abundant sunshine, relaxed lifestyle and easy-going manner. The city's modern skyline blends with magnificent colonial architecture, housing excellent retail outlets particularly around Hay and Murray stsand the malls running between them. King St, a historic and lovingly restored commercial precinct, is known for its fashion houses, cafes, art galleries and specialist book stores. more
