DESTINATION: Exmouth

Exmouth

Exmouth was established on the North West Cape in 1967, primarily as a US Naval Communications Station that has since ceased operating. Ecotours are well rewarded as the town's proximity to Ningaloo Reef, protected within Ningaloo Marine Park and Cape Range NP guarantees sightings of some extraordinary marine life.

Main Attractions

Excellent tours include glass-bottom, coral-viewing boat cruises, fishing charters, safaris, diving and sea kayaking. Inquire about turtle nesting (Nov-Jan), humpback whale watching (August-Nov) and swimming with the whale sharks (April-June).

Tours are offered of Vlaming Head Lighthouse, 17km north, and the views are spectacular. The wreck of the ill-fated SS Mildura, sunk in 1907, is 100m offshore. Ningaloo Marine Park, to the west, is the largest fringing coral reef in Australia with more than 220 coral species. Highlights of the park include swimming with giant whale sharks, greenback turtle nesting, and coral spawning that occurs after the March full moon. Within Cape Range NP is magnificent Shothole Canyon, 16km south, and Charles Knife Canyon, 23km south. Milyering Visitor Centre, 52km SW, is an environmentally friendly building with displays on the area's natural history and culture. Also not to be missed are Bundegi Beach, Turquoise Bay and Yardie Creek.

The region has an approximate area of 144,000 square kilometres encompassing a rugged outback of brown sandy plains and rocky highlands including Mt Augustus and the Kennedy Range. To the west, the outback meets 600 kilometres of stunning coastline edged with white sandy beaches and aqua waters from Shark Bay and Ningaloo Reef. more
