DESTINATION: EsperanceThe South Coast's pristine beaches, good fishing, and access to the Archipelago of the Recherche have contributed much to Esperance's popularity as a holiday destination. Situated 720km SE of Perth, the town is a commercial and service centre for nearby farming districts. Main AttractionsEsperance Municipal Museum, James St, has a collection of farm equipment, a marine exhibit, and remnants of Skylab, the US space station that fell to earth in the area in July 1979. For a distinctive souvenir, Mermaid Marine Leather processes and sells fashion accessories made from fish skins. Tanker Jetty is recommended for angling and seal watching. A 10km shorefront walking and cycling track follows the Bay of Isles. Fishing and diving tours and scenic cruises are also on offer. |

The spectacular 36km Great Ocean Drive takes a round-trip passing attractions such as: Pink Lake, a salt lake coloured pink by algae; Observatory Point and Lookout; Twilight Beach; a power-generating Wind Farm; Rotary Lookout; and the Archipelago of the Recherche (Bay of Isles), 105 islands that provide sheltered habitats for seals, penguins and birdlife. Cruises are available to Woody Island where camping is allowed Sept-April. Telegraph Farm, 21km NW, is a commercial protea farm that has buffalo, camels and other animals. Boardwalks facilitate birdwatching at Monjinup Lake Botanical Park, 20km west. White-sand swimming beaches and hilly scrublands are features of Cape Le Grand NP, 56km east. Beaches of note include Hellfire Bay, Thistle Cove and Lucky Bay; there are also scenic walks and sensational wildflower displays in spring. Cape Arid NP, 120km east, is a rugged setting for bushwalking, camping, fishing and 4WDing.
