DESTINATION: DerbyLocated on the King Sound, Derby is known for its boab trees which give the town its distinctive character. Derby is around 2643km NE of Perth, and is a service centre for the rich pastoral and mining hinterland and a gateway to exploring the Kimberley. Main AttractionsAnglers are often found at the Fitzroy River and on Derby Wharf. The wharf is also a good place to comprehend the magnitude of the tidal range here; 1.3m at low tide and 11.8m at high tide. Other points of interest in the town include the local history museum at Wharfinger House, Kimberley School of the Air, the Botanic Gardens, and the Joonjoo Botanical Trail. An administrative centre for several Aboriginal communities, Derby has a number of outlets selling traditional and contemporary indigenous art. |

The Boab Prison Tree, 7km south, is a massive hollowed boab, believed to have been used as a temporary cell for prisoners en route to Derby. Myall's Bore, nearby, is an astonishing 120m-long cattle trough. The self-drive Pigeon Heritage Trail highlights sites of interest between Derby and Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek NP. Derby is also a base for cruises, tours and scenic flights to Cockatoo Island, Buccaneer Archipelago and King Leopold Ranges.
