DESTINATION: Denham

Denham

Denham, 831km north of Perth, is the commercial centre for the extraordinary Shark Bay World Heritage Region. Historically a pearling town, but now is best known for its eco-tourism and its thriving fishing industry.

Main Attractions

Pioneer Park, off Hughes St, is a pleasant picnic spot with gas BBQ and an unusual whale-bone arch. Locally organised excursions include tours of Shark Bay Fisheries; a glass-bottom boat cruise to a pearl farm; and chartered flights and boat trips to Dirk Hartog Island, where the famed Dutch navigator landed in 1616, and where turtles hatch during April. Both the deep-sea and game fishing here are superb.

Nearby attractions

Monkey Mia, 25km NE, is where close-encounters with wild bottlenose dolphins occur. Rangers and an information centre shed light on this friendly exchange, which has occurred since the 1960s. To the north, Francois Peron NP covers 400km²; Peron Homestead, in the park, has a 'hot tub' filled by warm artesian waters; it is accessible by 2WD. Other parts of the park can be reached by 4WD only, including Cape Peron where dugongs (sea cows) and other marine life can be observed. Shell Beach, 50km south, is one of only 2 mainland beaches in the world comprised entirely of seashells. Stromatolites, found nowhere else in the world and of enormous scientific interest, can be found 100km SE, thriving in the warm waters of Hamelin Pool; tours are available. Nearby are the Telegraph Station (1884) and shell block quarry.

The region has an approximate area of 144,000 square kilometres encompassing a rugged outback of brown sandy plains and rocky highlands including Mt Augustus and the Kennedy Range.
