North-east is the Burrup Peninsula renowned for its 10 000 Aboriginal rock-art sites, best viewed on a tour. Also on the Peninsula is the Northwest Shelf Gas Project onshore operations, which pipes natural gas from offshore fields 130km north of Dampier. Its information centre is open weekdays. Dampier Archipelago NP comprises 42 islands within a radius of 45km of Dampier and is considered one of the country's best fishing spots. Archipelago tours and fishing charters depart from Dampier boat ramps.
