DESTINATION: AlbanyWestern Australia's oldest town, Albany was established in 1826 as a British military outpost. It now attracts many visitors to its beautiful scenery, heritage buildings and excellent fishing. Located 409km south of Perth at the edge of King George Sound and Princess Royal Harbour, its port today services the South West Coast, handling grain and silica sand. Main AttractionsStirling Tce is a historic street featuring Victorian shopfronts, the Old Post Office Museum and nearby, an operational Court House. The Old Gaol (1851) was constructed by convicts and houses a folk museum. Reputedly the town's oldest building, Patrick Taylor Cottage (circa 1832) has been restored and furnished with period memorabilia. National Trust-classified Strawberry Hill Farm, on Middleton Rd, is the site of an experimental farm (1836). Architectural highlights in York St include St Johns Church (1848) and the Town Hall (1886), now a theatre. A Colonial Buildings Historic Walk brochure, available from the information centre, guides visitors around these important sites. Off Forts Rd, Princess Royal Fortress was built to defend King George Sound and has daily tours, a nature trail and spectacular views. Residency Museum was a convict store converted in 1873 into a house for magistrates. Its displays; of the era of European exploration of Australia; include a full-scale replica of the 1826 settlement ship, the Amity. Mount Clarence and Mount Melville have panoramic lookouts and Middleton Beach has areas for picnicking, swimming, surfing and windsurfing. |

Nearby attractions
Renowned for its spectacular coastal views Torndirrup NP, 17km south, encompasses The Gap and Natural Bridge, the Blowholes, the Gorge and the Salmon Holes. At Frenchman Bay, 25km SE, is Whale World which operated as a whaling station until 1978. Now it houses a museum exhibiting hundreds of artefacts. Whale-watching trips are available July-Oct.
