Robinvale

This small town is located 473km NW of Melbourne and 83km SE of Mildura. Robinvale is sited within a loop of the Murray River and is almost encircled by it. The town's economy is based on the production of wine grapes and dried fruits. The largest olive orchard in Australia is located here and produces 1500 tonnes of olives annually from its 20 000 trees.


Main Attractions

Most of the grapes used in making McWilliams cream sherry are grown locally and processed at the huge McWilliams Winery in town. An original log cabin has become a tasting room, which is open weekdays. The information centre displays and sells locally made arts, crafts and produce. The recently restored old Railway Station, located close by, is now used as a sales outlet for ceramics. The Machinery Museum features steam engines and other farm machinery housed in a large split-log shed.

Robinvale Wines, located 5km south, has a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic wines, juices and fortified wines to taste and buy. The winery is open daily. Euston Weir, 2km south of the town, has a specially constructed fish ladder allowing fish to jump their way up to higher water levels. The Lock 15 gardens nearby are a good spot for a picnic. Kindalyn Almond Farm, 22km SE, is worthwhile visiting in spring when the trees are in full bloom. On weekends, fresh almonds and almond products are for sale. Daytrips can be made from the town to Hattah-Kulkyne NP, where visitors can see the unique Hattah Lakes system with its prolific birdlife; the park has over 200 bird species.
