DESTINATION: Port Fairy

This former whaling port is located at the estuary of the Moyne River. Port Fairy is a holiday resort bordered by both river and ocean and is home to a large fishing fleet. It is well-known for rock lobster and abalone fishing. The town is more widely known for the famous Port Fairy Folk Festival.

Main Attractions

One of Victoria's oldest towns, there are over 50 small stone cottages and bluestone buildings that are National Trust-classified. An historic walk leaflet is available from the information centre. There is a history centre in the old Court House, Gipps St. The old fort and signal station, Battery Hill, is located at the mouth of the Moyne River.

Nearby attractions

Brochures are available on the Mahogany Walk to Warrnambool: a 6-7hr one-way walk with walkers able to return to Port Fairy by bus. A causeway links Griffiths Island to the east of the town. Here, visitors can explore an area around the lighthouse where there are muttonbird rookeries. Mount Eccles NP is 56km NW. Tower Hill State Game Reserve, 14km east, is worthwhile exploring. There is an extinct volcano and crater lake with islands. A Natural History Centre is within the reserve where a nature walk begins.
