DESTINATION: OuyenThis town, located 107km south of Mildura, began to grow in 1910, when the surrounding land was opened up for settlement and clearing for wheat, oats and sheep. Queues of trucks waiting to unload their grain at the silos are a common scene here at harvest time. Main AttractionsOuyen's pioneers cleared many thousands of stumps in their efforts to create farming land from the mallee scrub, which covers the region. A memorial to their labour is the largest mallee stump in Australia, placed beside the Calder Hwy on the southern side of town. The Local History Resource Centre is located in the old Court House and comprises a significant collection of books, photographs, documents, maps, newspapers and cassettes. |
