Myrtleford

Surrounded by the Victorian Alps, this town is located at the foot of Mount Buffalo and is the centre for a district that produces timber, hops, tobacco, grapes and many kinds of nuts. Myrtleford has some of the largest walnut groves in the Southern Hemisphere.


Main Attractions

Interesting trees are a feature of the town. An ancient river red gum can be seen in Smith St. In the Lions Club Park, in Myrtle St, Hans Knorr's sculptured Phoenix Tree, symbolising the cycle of life, is displayed. In Albert St, a 100-year-old linden tree from Germany stands beside a historic home. Attractive parks abound in this town, including Cundy Park, on O'Donnell Ave, ideal for picnics and BBQs; Rotary Park, on the highway at the junction of a number of streams that flow into town, provides facilities and children's play equipment; and Jubilee Park, offering facilities, walkways and gardens. Historic items from the district are displayed in the Old School Museum, on the corner of Elgin and Albert sts, it is open Thurs-Sun, 2pm-4pm.

Myrtleford is a gateway to the great granite plateau of Mount Buffalo NP, a favourite destination for skiers in winter and walkers in summer. Lake Buffalo, 22km south, is great for boating, waterskiing, fishing and swimming.
