DESTINATION: Moe

Moe

The gateway to the Latrobe Valley and alpine region, Moe, 134km SE of Melbourne, is a major tourism centre in the region known as the 'Centre for Adventure'.

Main Attractions

Moe is home to Gippsland Heritage Park, a pioneer township with more than 35 buildings relocated from elsewhere in the Gippsland region. The park includes Bushy Park Homestead, the original home of Gippsland pioneer-explorer Angus McMillan; and an original Cobb & Co Coaching Inn from Pakenham East. Also part of the collection is a 2-storey iron-frame house, prefabricated (1850s) in England and shipped to Australia; the packing box was then used in the construction of the interior of the house. There is also an excellent collection of horse-drawn vehicles from the 1850s to the 1900s. All buildings are furnished in period-style. The Edward Hunter Reserve is an oasis in town featuring natural bushland with orchids. Brochures for self-guided walks around the town are available.

Nearby attractions

Moe is a good base for tours to the wonderful historic township of Walhalla with its narrow-gauge steam railway. Also nearby is the Baw Baw Plateau via Mount Erica or Mount St Gwinear and the Thompson Dam. There are easy or more difficult treks on offer in the Walhalla and Mountain Rivers district. Visitors can also travel through Willow Grove to the Blue Rock Dam for fishing and boating. A daytrip along Grand Ridge Rd takes visitors through the lush, picturesque timber and rural scenery of the Strzelecki Ranges.
