DESTINATION: Kyneton

Kyneton

Kyneton, 86km north of Melbourne, is an attractive historic town featuring 19th-century bluestone architecture. Small-scale manufacturing and farming boomed in the 1850s and 1860s in the rush to feed the thousands of miners who flocked to the district.

Main Attractions

Historic Piper St offers many specialty stores selling antiques, furniture, crafts and gourmet food. Kyneton Museum, a bluestone building that was once the Bank of New South Wales, recreates family life as it was in Victorian times. In the grounds are stables, a coach house and a drop-log cottage. The museum is open Fri-Sun and public holidays, 11am-4pm. Other buildings of note include Willis Steam Mill, the Court House and churches. Kyneton Botanic Gardens, in Clowes St, features a collection of rare and endangered trees, including a Chilean wine palm, blue atlas cedars and a golden English oak. The Campaspe River flows through the gardens and picnics on its banks are popular, as is the walking track from the gardens to the nearby racecourse.
