DESTINATION: Hamilton

Hamilton

A major centre for south-west Victoria, Hamilton is also known as the 'Wool Capital of the World'. Around 294km west of Melbourne, it is located on the largest volcanic plain in the Southern Hemisphere. Hamilton is a good base from which to explore the area; both Portland and Port Fairy, to the south, are within easy reach.

Main Attractions

Lake Hamilton is located on the eastern side of town and is a focus for local recreation. A walking track follows the lake and ends at a small swimming beach. Ansett Transport Museum is also beside the lake. The Botanic Gardens, in Thompson St, are ideal for picnics and relaxing. The Pastoral Museum is one of many historic buildings preserving the district's rural heritage. Hamilton Art Gallery has the impressive Paul Sandby Collection, which was donated by a local grazier. The Big Woolbales Complex, located in Coleraine Rd, displays woolshed memorabilia. Hamilton Country Spun Woollen Mill and Factory, in Peck St, offers sales and tours of the factory, Mon-Fri.
