DESTINATION: Eildon

Eildon

In a region that once thrived on timber and goldmining, Eildon, 130km NE of Melbourne, was built in the 1950s to house employees of the Lake Eildon Dam project. Construction of the dam created Lake Eildon; officially opened 1956; the largest artificial lake in Victoria and the main storage for the vast Goulburn Irrigation System. The town is almost surrounded by Lake Eildon NP (Frasers NP).

Main Attractions

Eildon has become a popular destination for inland waterskiers, wakeboarders, anglers, sailing enthusiasts, canoeists, sailboarders and jet skiers. Over 800 houseboats are moored on the lake, and at Eildon Boat Harbour, boats and equipment of all sorts, including houseboats, are available for hire. There are a variety of self-guided walks, drives and horseriding trails available from the town.

Nearby attractions

Part of Lake Eildon is contained within Lake Eildon NP. Watersports, fishing, walking and camping are popular activities in the 300km park, which is home to a variety of birds, kangaroos, wallabies and deer. Handfeeding the deer is an attraction at Eildon Deer Park. The Snobs Creek Discovery Centre and Freshwater Fish Hatchery, 6km SW, breeds millions of fingerling trout to stock the state's waterways; it is open to the public. Nearby, the creek drops downhill in a series of cascades known as Snobs Creek Falls.
