DESTINATION: EdenhopeThis small west Wimmera town is the administrative centre for sheep and cattle country that was first settled in 1845. Vast wetlands surround the town, which lies on the shores of Lake Wallace. Main AttractionsA cairn beside the lake commemorates the first Aboriginal cricket team to tour England (1868). The team was made up of players from the Edenhope and Harrow district and was coached on the shores of Lake Wallace, they also played in Melbourne and Sydney. Lake Wallace is 7m deep when full and is a habitat for many species of waterbirds. It is one of the best fly-fishing spots in the district with anglers targeting trout and redfin. There are 2 boardwalks on the walking and cycling track around the lake for viewing the birdlife. Lake Wallace is also a popular recreational area with swimmers, anglers and boating enthusiasts. The endangered red-tailed black cockatoo can be seen around the golf course at certain times of the year. |
