DESTINATION: Colac

Lying at the eastern edge of the world's third largest volcanic plain, Colac is located at the foothills of the Otway Ranges. The town is also the eastern gateway to the Volcanic Discovery Trail and is at the centre of some of Australia's richest farming areas.

Main Attractions

Promoted as the 'Gateway to the Otways', Colac is also a good base for those exploring south to the Great Ocean Rd; it is an hour's drive to the Twelve Apostles; and north to Ballarat. Colac is located on the shores of Lake Colac: the largest freshwater lake in Victoria. The lake is popular for swimming, boating, waterskiing and fishing and there are many picnic spots dotted around its shores. A nature walk leads from the information centre to Colac Botanic Gardens, on the foreshore at the northern end of Queen St. Here, there are picnic and BBQ facilities, and a children's playground.

Nearby attractions

Lake Corangamite, located 11km NW, is one of the district's many crater lakes. This very large lake has no outlet and is 3-times saltier than seawater. Boating is not allowed, as the lake is principally a wildlife habitat. Red Rock Lookout, 22km north, is located on twin volcanic peaks and offers a view of 30 volcanic lakes. At least 16 species of waterbirds have been recorded at Floating Islands Reserve, 18km west. There are 2 short walking trails giving access to the reserve and its unique islands. The scenic Otway Ranges are 30km south and definitely worthwhile visiting. Birregurra, 20km east of Colac, has interesting old buildings.
