DESTINATION: AlexandraRich pastoral land and trout streams surround this Goulburn River town, located about 80km north of Melbourne. Gold discoveries in the 1850s and 1860s brought an influx of miners to the area. This prosperous period led to the construction of important civic buildings, including the Law Courts, Shire Hall, Post Office and the National Trust-classified ANZ Bank building. The town's economy relies on sawmilling; Gould's Timber mill exports to Japan; there are also 4 trout farms in the area. Main AttractionsAlexandra's main tourist attraction is the Timber and Tramway Museum housed in the old Railway Station, Station St. On the second Sunday of each month, and on public and school holidays, the restored narrow-gauge engines are steamed up for tourist trips. Bookings are essential. On the second Saturday of each month, Sept-June, a bush market is held in Perkins St. |
