DESTINATION: TriabunnaTriabunna is located on Spring Bay, 86km NE of Hobart. Once it was a whaling base and garrison town for the nearby Maria Island penal settlement. Today, the town's mainstays are the woodchipping, scallop and abalone industries. Main AttractionsA town walk from the visitor centre takes in 17 heritage buildings, the oldest being the Police Watch-house and Magistrates Office (both 1840s). The visitor centre has interpretative displays and interesting tapestries. A Seafarers' Memorial on the Esplanade commemorates sailors lost in Tasmanian waters. Pioneer Park has displays of historic farm machinery from the region. |

Informal tours of North Products woodchip mill at Freestone Point can be arranged on arrival. Boats can be chartered for fishing expeditions. Ferries leave daily from Eastcoaster Resort, 7km south, for Maria Island, where the main highlights are penal settlement ruins at Darlington, painted cliffs, fossil deposits and walking trails in Maria Island NP.
