Stanley

The charming north-west coastal township of Stanley is located on a peninsula and is overlooked by a 150m-high basalt rock formation known as The Nut. The original port for the Van Diemen's Land Company from 1826, it is known for fresh fish, crayfish and oysters.


Main Attractions

There are many historic buildings, particularly near the waterfront. Old bluestone buildings include the Van Diemen's Land Company store, now an art gallery. In Church St are the Union Hotel (1849), and Commercial Hotel (1842), now a private residence. The Plough Inn (1850s) has been restored as an antiques' gallery with an adjacent craft shop. The nearby Discovery Centre Folk Museum is a repository for local history. The summit of The Nut can be reached by chairlift or walking track and provides spectacular views over the coastline and Bass Strait islands. Lyons Cottage in Alexander Tce, the birthplace of Prime Minister Sir Joseph Lyons, is open to the public. The burial-ground, off Browns Rd, has early colonial graves, and there are little penguin and muttonbird rookeries in the area.

The gracious colonial property Highfield and its original outbuildings are 2km north on Scenic Dr. Dip Falls, 40km SE via Mawbanna, is a pretty double-drop waterfall surrounded by rainforest. Nearby are a picnic area, walking trails and a giant stringybark known as the Big Tree.
