Richmond

This lovely old town is located 26km from Hobart. Richmond is one of Tasmania's earliest settlements.


Main Attractions

Richmond has dozens of historic buildings, some of which have been converted into restaurants, shops and galleries. Highlights of the local heritage tour include convict-built Richmond Bridge (1823), the oldest of its kind in Australia; the original Post Office building; St Luke's Anglican Church (1836); and St John's Catholic Church (1837), with cemetery headstones dating back to 1823. Guided tours are available for Old Richmond Gaol (1825), in Bathurst St, one of the best-preserved convict establishments in the country. Saddlers Court (circa 1848) and Peppercorn Gallery (circa 1850) feature local arts and crafts. The Georgian mansion Prospect House (1830s), off Hobart Rd, is said to be haunted. Tourist attractions include Richmond Maze and Tearooms, and award-winning Old Hobart Town Model Village which shows Hobart as it was in the 1820s. Picnic facilities on the riverbank are near the famous Richmond Bridge.

Founded in 1804 and declared a city in 1842, Hobart is rich in reminders of its colonial past. It is Australia's second-oldest city (after Sydney) and more than 90 of the city's buildings are National Trust-classified. Hobart is nestled on the western shore of the Derwent River and at the foot of Mount Wellington, which is often snowcapped in the winter months.
