Port Arthur

Sited on the beautiful but remote Tasman Peninsula, historic Port Arthur was one of Australia's most infamous penal settlements from 1830 to 1877.


Main Attractions

Port Arthur Historic Site has more than 30 sandstone buildings, ruins and sites open for inspection. These include the church, penitentiary, model prison, asylum, guard tower and period-furnished houses. The visitors centre has an interpretation gallery and restaurant and takes bookings for the popular evening ghost tours. Daily cruises are available on the harbour and to the Isle of the Dead, the island's cemetery.

Just 1km from the historic site is The Bush Mill Steam Railway and Settlement, where visitors can experience life in a pioneer timber camp and enjoy a steam-train ride. There is a nature walk to nearby Stewarts Bay. Coal Mines Historic Site is 30km NW. Palmers Lookout, 3km south, has views over the harbour and coastline. Remarkable Cave is 6km south in the rugged Tasman NP.
